Giving Body

This book is a documentation of and tribute to the beauty I cherish within the communal roots of all beings performing erotic labor around the world. The title “Giving Body” is about our human bodies and what it means to give. The bodies within these pages contain multitudes. 

To all beings tending to fractured roots, whether fractured by diaspora or erasure, through this project I hope to make us more visible to each other as embodied spirits and to continue holding a vision of a country and a world that is free from state-sanctioned violence and the horrors of the carceral system while speaking honestly about the realities of the present moment and the need for full decriminalization of our communities.

5 ELEMENT PHASES

I’ve organized this book using 5 Element Theory, a component of Traditional Chinese medicine, of which I am a student and teacher through the modality of Qigong.  

Each element phase: Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire, has a corresponding virtue: Trust, Courage, Gentleness, Kindness, and Happiness. The primary subjects of these photographs – professional sex workers – by the nature of their work, embody and lead with these virtues which make the world a more harmonious place.

The elements are not meant to be understood as finite entities, but as forces of transformation that express themselves through every aspect of our lives: Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. 

Each section begins with red ink on yellow paper, which I have written during the week of the Blood Corn Moon Lunar Eclipse in Pisces (9.7.25). These introductions function as a blessing for the virtue inscribed and relate to the element phase that follows.
